The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce their exciting new program for their 34th season. Maestro Heiichiro Ohyama and SBCO will be performing some of the finest gems of the repertoire with five of the world’s most prominent musicians as guest artists all on the stage of the beautiful Lobero Theater in Santa Barbara.
For their first performance in October, SBCO presents Maestro Mozart featuring the internationally renowned soloist and multi-linguist Lucille Chung. The program, which features Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, is somewhat in keeping with the premiere of this work, where Mozart interjected several additional of his works, and then finished the concert with the last movement of the symphony.
Ms. Chung, who has performed in Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, is married to pianist Alessio Bax, who will be returning to SBCO in November to perform Beethoven’s rousing “Emperor” concerto. This magnificent concerto will be paired with George Bizet’s Symphony in C.
Making his Santa Barbara debut, the legendary pianist Tong-Il Han will join Maestro Ohyama and the orchestra in a performance Beethoven’s Eroica Concerto. Mr. Han, who has soloed with the top orchestras of the world, performed in JFK’s White House and was a guest on Steve Allen’s hit TV show I’ve Got a Secret. In April, former SBCO concertmaster and current Principal Associate Concertmaster of the NY Philharmonic Sheryl Staples will return to her old stomping ground to perform Mozart’s Turkish Violin Concerto, on one of the world’s great instruments, a Guarneri del Gesu, circa 1728. For their final performance of the season, SBCO presents guitarist Jason Vieaux in a performance of Joaquin Rodrigo’s most famous work, the Concierto de Arunjuez.
The Chamber Players will perform in February and a second time, the date of which is TBD. SBCO invites you to join their Supper Club, a delicious catered meal served on the Lobero patio directly before the orchestra concerts. Call 966.2441 for information. Sbco.org
